Vancouver Spider Vein Treatment
Removing Unsightly Surface Veins
Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasias are dilated capillary veins less than 2 mm. in diameter. They are small blue to red appearing blood vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin and occur either in lines or web-like patterns.

They are usually visible on the legs but sometimes are visible around the nose and lips and are commonly referred to as “broken veins”. While they can ache, burn or itch now and then, they are usually not symptomatic. Spider veins are usually not harmful and are simply unsightly.
Symptoms & Causes
You’ll notice spider veins as discolored splotches on your legs. They are typically found on the upper portion of the leg, near the thigh.
Spider veins can be caused by the following:
- Damaged blood valves
- Blood clots (even after the clot is removed)
- Extended periods of standing or sitting
- Genetics
- Hormones
- Pregnancy
Some patients experience discomfort or itchiness with their spider veins, although this is a rare symptom that is more commonly attributed to varicose veins.
Removing Spider Veins
Most people choose to have spider veins removed for aesthetic reasons. There are many possible treatments for spider veins. In mild cases, wearing compression stockings may help. Compression stocks put more pressure on the leg veins, which improves blood flow.
One of the most common treatments for spider veins is sclerotherapy. This is a minimally invasive procedure where an injection of a solution is applied to the vein. This solution irritates the blood vessel, causing the walls to stick together and prevent blood from flowing in, and effectively rerouting blood flow to other veins. The spider veins should fade over time after this treatment is applied.
