Venous Ulcers
Treatment & Management for Venous Ulcers in Vancouver
The most severe stage of venous reflux disease is when the inadequate blood flow results in an ulcer, commonly near the ankle. In fact, damaged or diseased perforating veins are the source of venous reflux in nearly two-thirds of venous ulcer patients. These ulcers are raw and painful wounds which may not always be healed using only antibiotics or salves. Vancouver Vein & Surgical Center is experienced in offering the most progressive approaches in treating patients with advanced symptoms of venous reflux, including venous leg ulcers.
Symptoms of Venous Ulcers
If someone with a vein condition suffers a wound on the foot or ankle, the body will have a difficult time transporting blood and oxygen to the area to begin the healing process. This leaves the wound susceptible to more damage that can eventually result in an ulcer.
Some symptoms of ulcers include:
- Nonhealing wounds on the foot or ankle
- Brown discoloration
- Dry skin
- A rash
- Foul smells and ooze leaking from the wound
- Redness or swelling around the skin
- Pain that gets worse over time
- A fever
Patients with varicose veins or previous leg injuries are more likely to encounter venous ulcers, as are people who smoke or are obese.
It can take several months for an ulcer to heal completely. Recovery times vary, but it often depends on the severity of the ulcer and underlying vein disease that led to the ulcer’s formation. At Vancouver Vein & Surgical Center, we will work closely with you to create an effective and efficient treatment plan.
