Vancouver Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Treatment for Varicose Veins
Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient surgical procedure used to remove surface veins. This is usually completed in our office using local anesthesia. Incisions are tiny (stitches are generally not necessary) and typically leave imperceptible puncture mark scars. Post-operative discomfort is minimal. After the vein has been removed by phlebectomy, a bandage and/or compression stocking is worn for a short period.
This treatment is usually recommended for patients with varicose veins. Thanks to its minimally-invasive nature, ambulatory phlebectomy does not usually render patients unable to work or carry out their regular activities. This treatment can be done in a single day and you can resume your normal life after it’s over. However, you will most likely need to wear compression stockings for a period of time.
What to Expect
The first thing that needs to be done is a physical assessment. Your doctor needs to be sure that this is the appropriate treatment for you and that it will not pose any significant risk to your health. If your doctor discovers blood clots, or that the real problem stems from veins deeper in the skin, then ambulatory phlebectomy might not be a suitable treatment.
Ambulatory phlebectomy is a simple procedure that can be done in four steps:
- The veins that need treatment will be marked
- A local anesthetic is injected into the surgical area
- The marked veins are removed using small, surface-level incisions
- The incisions are closed up and compression stockings are provided to stimulate blood flow in the legs
You may experience some bruising and swelling in the treatment area. This is normal and should go away in a few days. Ambulatory phlebectomy can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other treatments as part of a comprehensive care plan for vein disorders.
